The News
On January 27, 2026, Clawdbot—the viral AI agent that’s been making waves in the developer community—officially rebranded to Moltbot. The change came after Anthropic, the company behind Claude, reached out about trademark concerns.
Creator Peter Steinberger was direct about it: “I was forced to rename the account by Anthropic. Wasn’t my decision.”
Why the Change?
Anthropic owns multiple trademarks related to Claude, including the “Clawd” mascot (the lobster you see when reloading Claude Code). The name “Clawdbot” was too similar to these protected marks, creating a legal conflict.
The new name, Moltbot, is actually clever branding. As the team explained: “Molt” is what lobsters do to grow—a fitting metaphor for an agent that’s constantly evolving and learning.
What’s Different?
The name: Clawdbot → Moltbot
The mascot: Clawd → Molty
The website: https://clawd.bot/ → https://molt.bot/
The GitHub: https://github.com/clawdbot/clawdbot → https://github.com/moltbot/moltbot
Everything else stays the same. The agent’s functionality, philosophy, and mission remain unchanged. It’s still the same powerful, open-source autonomous agent running on your hardware.
The Fallout
The rebranding wasn’t without drama. Crypto traders holding “Clawd” meme coins were understandably upset. Steinberger had to ask them to stop “harassing” him on X, noting that the constant pinging was “actively damaging the project.”
There was also a brief security scare when Steinberger’s personal GitHub account was briefly compromised by crypto scammers (though Moltbot’s official account remained secure).
What This Means for You
If you’ve been following Clawdbot, here’s what to do:
- Update your bookmarks to https://molt.bot/
- Update your GitHub references if you’re using the project
- Keep your existing installations running—they’ll continue to work, but you may want to update to the latest version with the new branding
- Spread the word about the new name to avoid confusion
The Bigger Picture
This isn’t the first time trademark disputes have reshaped the AI landscape. OpenAI had similar issues with its Ive/io deal, and Cameo sued over OpenAI’s virtual likeness tool. As the AI space matures, these kinds of legal clarifications are becoming more common.
The good news? Moltbot’s core mission—giving developers genuine autonomy and privacy with a self-hosted AI agent—remains as strong as ever. The name change is just a formality. The future of computing in your hands? That’s still the same.
